Brian Seidel was a highly accomplished artist. His former teacher, the acclaimed Jeffrey Smart once described Seidel’s work as “evocations of moments of rapture”. That said however, his work could also be startlingly quiet - moments of reflection struck clear.

‘The Mirror’ is an example of the former. In it, a young woman slumps over a cushion, her bare spine to us. The work is careful and quiet, a study of the human body, its history, possibilities and curvatures. This is the kind of work born from an artist whose first port of call was always to observe.

Seidel is represented in regional and public collections across Australia. A friend of Brain Dunlop, he is considered a significant Australian artist. For collectors of prints and studies of the human body, ‘The Mirror’ is a penetrating find.
