John Beard ( 1943 - )
Born in Wales in 1943, John Beard is a prestigious Sydney-London based painter who specialises in semi-abstraction and portraiture. At 19 years old, Beard won the Welsh National Art Scholarship and proceeded to study at the Royal College of Art in London. His addictive style of portraiture usually features dark, monochrome washes where the subject seems on the brink of disappearing. His work is now held in collections all over the world and in 2007 he was awarded the Art Gallery of NSW Archibald Prize for his portrait of installation artist, Janet Lawrence.
