Sybil Craig

B. 1901 – 1989

Sybil Craig is a modern Australian artist. She was the third woman to be appointed an official war artist, the first of whom to be stationed at a munitions factory. Craig studied drawing under George Bell, crafting a style that was at once bright and bold, and cautiously daring.

Represented at the National Gallery of Victoria (who have a significant holding of her drawings), National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, State Library of Victoria and across regional galleries, Craig is a luminous yet under-observed figure of Australian modernism. She was described by art historian Mary Eagle as “devastatingly direct” and “almost overwhelmingly vital.”
