In ‘Titania Dreaming’ Charles Blackman depicts Titania, Queen of the Fairies, a driving force in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In the play, Titania is bewitched and falls under the spell of Nick Bottom, whose head has been replaced with a donkey. Under her enchantment, Titania loses her sense of power, growing fawning instead.

In Blackman’s rendition, Titania’s capitulation is depicted with romance. She sleeps, motifs from Blackman’s oeuvre surrounding her: a cat; apple; miniscule chair; and butterfly. Gone is chaos and mischief, leaving only tenderness.

Represented in all public collections, Blackman’s vision continues to delight and inspire viewers. For fans of the artist, Shakespeare or unexpected soulmates, this work of art in an exquisite gun metal toned frame will enchant.
