John Bloomfield is a British-Australian artist, born in London and residing in Sydney, Australia. Widely recognised as a painter of architecture and portraits in a photo-realistic style, Bloomfield is also known for being controversially withdrawn from the Archibald prize in 1975 for having painted his portrait of Tim Burstall from a photograph. The prize has since widened its definition of ‘portrait’ to include works based on photographs, thanks to Bloomfield.
