David Larwill’s work radiates a direct, spontaneous energy. Rather than focus on single subjects or compositions, he was diaristic and instinctual – capturing friends, family, street life, parties and the beach with a sense of boundless childlike wonder. 

In ‘Frenzy’, Larwill presents a portrait of a man with a hat. Etched in gold against black, the work is regal in palette but lively in form, a breath of fresh air from a man who had a nickname for everyone. 

One of Australia’s leading figurative expressionists, Larwill was a founding member of ROAR Studios, established in Melbourne in 1982. He is represented across public institutions, constituting an important figure of Australian art who bucked against the status quo. 

For collectors of contemporary Australian art and prints, ‘Frenzy’ is a fantastic find.
