At the heart of Kathrin Longhurst’s work are collisions – East/West, communism/capitalism, past/future and masculine/feminine. She spent her childhood in East Berlin at the height of the Cold War, longing for the glamourous promises lying on the other side of the wall. Her work tracks this tension, employing communist propaganda beside capitalist glamour.

‘Nothing Can Stop Us Now’ subverts gender roles associated with war. In place of the stereotypical male pilot, Longhurst paints a woman pouting at the viewer. She upends historical, patriarchal notions of power to envision a gender equal future – indeed, Longhurst’s feminism fuels her work. Women conquer men’s roles without ever foregoing their femininity.

Longhurst has an avid collector following. An autodidact, she is a multi-time Archibald, Darling, Doug Moran, Sulman, Percival Portrait, Mosman and Black Swan Prize finalist. In 2021 she won the Archibald Packing Room Prize with her portrait of Kate Cebrano.

For collectors of high-realist, contemporary and feminist art, Longhurst is an invigorating find.
