Adam Nudelman’s work is renowned for its deftness. Within each work is a subtle discourse about displacement and cultural identity. The grandson of Polish Jewish immigrants, Nudelman knows acutely the experience of being severed from one’s roots. His family history is shrouded with the unspoken, traumatic and secret.

In ‘Before the Fall’, Nudelman’s experience as both Australian and part of a fractured family history surfaces. Placing Poccnocchi beside a figurine of Ned Kelly, the work alludes to history, concealment and through its title, spirituality. The iconography is rich, requiring careful consideration. Perhaps Nudelman is not only commenting about his own experience, but also about Australia’s own often unspoken history of violence and displacement.

Nudelman is represented in multiple regional, university and museum collections including the National Museum, Canberra, Gippsland Art Gallery and the Victorian College of the Arts. For collectors of symbolic, socially conscious and spiritual art, ‘Before the Fall’ is a rich find.
