Herbert Rose was born in Windsor, Melbourne, the son of Australian photographer George Rose. He first studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School, then Société des Artistes Français, a successor to the Paris Salon.

Rose travelled extensively, with this etching a vestige from his time in Italy. It depicts the city of Venice where gondoliers push down canals, girt by European architecture. Glowing with romance, ‘Venice’ is a beautiful find for collectors of European prints and those lusting for an Italian sojourn.
