Brett Whiteley 'Poem for a Lover' - original screen print

Regular price $18,000.00

Brett Whiteley is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. Having won the Art Gallery of NSW Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes several times, Whiteley’s artistic recognition transcended into celebrity status both here and overseas. Known for his sensuous line work, ‘Poem to a Lover’ testifies to Whiteley’s enduring adoration for the romantic. A heartfelt musing on being in love, this depiction of a cherry blossom tree engages nature as a metaphor for a lover’s journey - delicate, wild, and in full bloom.

‘Poem to a Lover’ marks the moment in time when Brett Whiteley was in the final days of his marriage to his long time muse Wendy Whiteley and embarking on a new, and ultimately tragic love affair with fellow heroin addict, Janice Spencer. The inspiration for ‘Poem to a Lover’ came from Brett and Janice’s romantic sojourn in Japan. Wendy was successful in overcoming drug addiction while Brett and his lover Janice both died of heroin overdoses.

This masterful original screen print was created with nine stencils and hand embellished by the artist with pink metallic paint. It is sure to always inspire those who cherish the visual poetry of Brett Whiteley.
