Charles Blackman | Rare Original Etchings You Will Treasure

Posted by Angela Tandori on

We are thrilled to bring to your attention an exclusive collection of Charles Blackman’s etchings, produced by the artist at Sydney’s Crown Street Press in collaboration with master printmaker James Whitington between the late 1980s and mid-1990s.

Charles BLACKMAN - 'The Journey'

Charles Blackman had an enduring fascination with printmaking. His introduction to James Whitington began with an exploration of themes from the popular Alice series. It was followed by “The Book of Imaginary Butterflies”, reflective of Blackman’s fascination with the winged marvels which he had observed while living near the rainforest at Buderim in Queensland.

 Charles BLACKMAN - 'Three Butterflies'

Three Angels and The Journey are among the most significant works from the period. The deeply bitten aquatints are results of a labour-intensive three-plate etching process. The blue and gold etching pigments produce elegantly tinted backgrounds that shift from mediative blues to evocative greens.

The children populating these etchings reflect Charles’s joy of parenthood. They depict his youngest sons, Felicien and Axiom, and their enthrallment with the flora and fauna whether at Buderim or around Sydney’s public gardens.

The dolphin was derived from a stencilled graffiti which Blackman had observed on his regular walks between his residence and Crown Street Press. The inclusion of graffiti captures the artist’s awareness of the visual noise of the urban environment, which expressed itself earlier in the presence of hoardings, advertisements, and promotional posters in the Schoolgirls series.
