Alun Leach-Jones is one of Australia’s most prominent abstract artists. His imagery is an interplay of colour, form and philosophy – intense configurations that summon curiosity, creating space for contemplation and discovery.

In this work, which derives from the ‘The Philosophy of Objects’ series, a hypnotic configuration rears from matte blackness. Leach-Jones’s use of colour is striking, more musical than visual – an operatic meditation on form itself, the essence of objects. What do you see in his visual mantra? The dance of contrast?

Leach-Jones was part of the National Gallery of Victoria’s landmark The Field exhibition; the next year he represented Australia at the Bienale de Sao Paulo in Brazil. His works can be found at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and British Museum, and across Australian state collections.

For collectors of mid-century and abstract art, Leach-Jones is a burst of welcome energy.
