Brian Seidel was a highly accomplished artist. His former teacher, the acclaimed Jeffrey Smart once described Seidel’s work as “evocations of moments of rapture”. That said however, his work could also be startlingly quiet - moments of reflection struck clear.

‘Repose’ is an example of the former. In it, a young woman slumps over a cushion, her eyes closed and hand holding a rose. The work is careful and quiet, a study of the human body, its history, possibilities and curvatures. The rose recalls romance, the fleetingness of life and beauty, and fragility, in spite of a thorny exterior.

Seidel is represented in regional and public collections across Australia. A friend of Brain Dunlop, he is considered a significant Australian artist. For collectors of prints and studies of the human body, ‘Repose’ is a penetrating find.
