Auguste Blackman’s 'Suppertime' echoes his father, Charles Blackman, as well as family friend, Mirka Mora. Brilliantly bright, heartfelt and bold, this work also ruminates on the experience of loss. Representing Auguste’s first major series since the passing of his father Charles and friend Mirka - both of whom were iconic Australian artists - it is a tribute to their enduring artistic legacy.

'Suppertime' unfurls with every glance. From one perspective, it is a call to care for the environment, while from another, this avian ode is poetry in flight. As Auguste muses “the first bird call of the day sets the mood.” Stylistically, 'Suppertime' also references Mirka, who interestingly, started drawing at Charles’s encouragement. Caught between permanence and flux, Auguste’s bird is conduit for time, space and the connection between artists, friends and a father and son.

Auguste is a respected Australian artist who has consistently exhibited for almost forty years. That he is the progeny of revered artistic dynasty the Blackman family, contributes a unique perspective to his work. Whether reflecting on the experience of growing up among artists, or demonstrating a born passion for painting, Auguste remains a dynamic and rich voice in Australian art.

"At the end of a long day the wise Owl has everything he could possibly want within himself. He is content and gives thanks to the moon for a wonderful life. This is a painting about contentment and inner peace. We all want to find these feelings in our daily lives and it is always possible on any given day. The Owl also has the capacity to create a party that runs into the night. Celebrating the moon with friends as he has wine and tea available. In a funny way when I make a good painting like this, I too feel like celebrating."
