In ‘The Conversation’, Brian Dunlop captures a girl talking with her doll. She is his neighbour’s granddaughter and a frequent subject in his work. As she often is, this subject appears unaware of our presence, enraptured in a conversation we are not privy to.

Thematically, ‘The Conversation’ pricks at the essence of childhood. Dunlop catches a girl in serious discourse with her doll and rather than mock it, perceives it with quiet grace. This is imagination at work.

This work is a triumph of composition. Anchored by a geometric rug, it is flushed with sunlight from a nearby window. The indoors and outdoors sit in utter harmony, leaving space for the viewer to reflect on their own childhood kinships. Represented in all public collections, Dunlop is among Australia’s most prized figurative artists. This work will enhance collections of figurative art, interior scenes and important Australian art.
