Life is comprised of transitions - days dissolve into nights, consciousness into sleep and childhood into adolescence. In 'Nightfall', Charles Blackman distills this phenomena in a girl as she drifts through space. Like his famed Schoolgirl and Alice series, 'Nightfall' considers the preciousness of youth. It also speaks to something more profound. Created in London when Charles was thirty five, Nightfall grapples with his wife Barbara Blackman’s encroaching blindness, which in her words had initially plunged her into a "black hole of despair".

It rests too on Charles's experience of fatherhood. From this perspective, 'Nightfall' is not just about darkness or youth. Instead, laden with the knowledge everything is temporary, Charles evokes the poetry between transience and transcendence.

Never before seen by the public, 'Nightfall' has been revived as a fine quality limited edition print. Created with museum grade archival materials and hand signed by the artist, this work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from The Charles Blackman Foundation so that you can document your collection. Once treasured exclusively by the Blackman family this poetic picture can form part of your family story too.
