David Rankin

B. 1946

David Rankin is an acclaimed Australian New York based artist. His work is distinguished by its loose, expressionistic use of line. It is often imbued with a darkness sprung from real events, such as the 1997 fire that ravaged his studio. As husband to Lily Brett - an author and daughter of Holocaust survivors - Rankin has also explored Jewish and matrimonial themes, illustrating two of her books about the Holocaust.

In 1983, Rankin won the Wynne Prize. He is currently represented in numerous public collections including at the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales and Queensland Art Gallery. From 2005 to 2006, a major retrospective of his work toured Australian galleries and in 2013, American art historian Dore Ashton published a monograph on the artist.
