Charles Blackman 'Philippa I' 1971 - ink on paper

Regular price $2,000.00

From 1970 to 1971, Charles Blackman was awarded a studio in Paris as part of the Citè des Artes scholarship. Immediately, he fell in love. Representing what would be known as his Golden Era for drawing, Blackman immersed himself in Parisian culture - setting out to master the ‘nude’. ‘Philippa’ was sketched during Blackman's time spent living in Paris - a time of great creative development, when his international career was well under way. According to his eldest son Auguste, Phillipa was one of Charles' favourite models, originally from Australia and also living in Paris. In this wistful drawing, content and wide-eyed Philippa is caught in the winds of adventure. For all its idiosyncrasies, Blackman was a devout Francophile. His work from this era beams with an enlivened zeal for creation and ‘Philippa’ is a fine example. An embodiment of Blackman’s deep romance for the world, this work speaks to the French influence, as well as the distinct poetry of its creator. Capturing a moment of inspiration between the artist and the muse, ‘Philippa’ not only depicts a moment of connection in the studio, it forges one between viewer and artist - pulling us back into the city of love.
