A painter, sculptor, draughtsman and printer, Hans Arkeveld is among Perth’s foremost artists. For more than thirty years, he has been an artist in residence at the School of Anatomy and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia (UWA), Perth, transforming aspects of human biology into unexpected art.
Arkeveld’s practice is characterised by its range. Finding art is almost any material, his work spans the human body’s machinations, social justice and pure joy. In 2000, he was made an honorary fellow of UWA, with Dr Jan Meyer reflecting;
“Hans has altered our awareness of ourselves. His being here has made a difference to us. He makes us feel good about ourselves, what we do and how we do it.”
Despite not seeking fame, Arkeveld is a sought after artist. He is represented in numerous public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, as well as many notable private and corporate collections. In 2009, he was awarded the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from Artsource, Western Australia’s leading visual arts body.
