Jazmina Cininas 'Ann of Meremoisa 1623'

Regular price $1,500.00

Jazmina Cininas’s practice revolves around the female werewolf. In this work, she transcribes a true event from 1623, in which thirteen Estonian women were tried as werewolves. Among them was Ann, the subject of this work.

Ann confessed to the charges. She was also blamed for the death of a horse and small animals, which she denied. Peppered with Baltic symbols - the Estonian horse, European mink cornflower - this work explores the line between the real and imagined. It brings the viewer back to a time rife with witches, werewolves and feared femininity.

An academic, lecturer and artist, Cininas has held prestigious residencies here and abroad, received a doctorate and is represented in public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia. Her rich, howling work is alive - full moon or not - and will illuminate collections of contemporary, historical and feminist art.
