Jim Thalassoudis' paintings illustrate his intense observation of the sky and its minute changes in hue and colour. His works force you to raise your eyes to where the setting sun and urban pollution tinge the clouds in subtle tints of yellows, pinks, blues, and purples.

The recent body of work focuses on neon signs, formerly much-maligned as visual pollution but currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity as heritage-listed vintage artefacts. The richness of saturated colours is contrasted by the artist effectively against the background skyline resulting in compositions that are at once memorable and iconic.

Melbourne’s iconic Little Audrey, or Skipping Girl Vinegar, has been an object of Thalassoudis’s enduring fascination and a subject of an ongoing artistic exploration. Each work pays tribute to Melbourne’s celebrated landmark while examining the subtle shifts in its appearance with changing seasons and times of day. The eagle-eyed viewer may even distinguish Southern Cross among background constellations.

Described as one of the most outstanding colourists of his generation, the Adelaide-based Thalassoudis has been exhibiting regularly since the mid-1980s. Finalist in the 2015 edition of the Wynne Prize, the artist has attained curatorial and collectors’ following. His works have been acquired by notable public, corporate and private collections in Australia and abroad.
