Collection: John Perceval

B. 1923 - 2000.

John Perceval was the last surviving member of the Angry Penguins, a group of artists who rebelled against the conservatism of the art establishment. Largely self-taught, Perceval developed his painting and drawing skills while bed-ridden with polio in 1938.

In 1965 he took up the Australian National University’s inaugural Creative Fellowship and in 1971, author Margaret Plant published the first monograph on him. Prior to his death, Perceval broke the record for the most expensive work of art ever sold by a living Australian artist. Winner of the McCaughey and Wynne Prizes, Perceval represents a distinct, expressionistic voice in Australian art.
