Louise Tomlinson

B. 1964

Louise Tomlinson was born in Tongala, a small town in Northern Victoria. While she spent most of her upbringing in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, she was always drawn to the countryside. In 1980, she thus decided to relocate to Ballarat to study fine art. Here, her pull towards nature developed into a passion.

In 1989, Tomlinson moved to Tasmania to explore its Heritage listed wilderness and complete an Honours degree in painting and drawing. She returned to Southern Victoria in 1992, where she rediscovered the landscape of her childhood and completed a Secondary Education degree at the University of Melbourne.

Currently, Tomlinson lives and works as an artist and sessional university tutor in Ballarat. Still enthralled by nature, her work examines the landscape from a myriad of lenses, including spiritual and Indigenous perspectives. There is a haunting quality to her work, as though the landscapes she distills are alive. For collectors of contemporary landscape art, Tomlinson is a quietly thrilling find.
