In 2019, Pablo Picasso’s ‘Femme au Chien’ sold at auction for near 55 million USD. In it, the artist’s second wife, Jacqueline Roque, sits with their Afghan Hound, Kaboul. Picasso and Roque adored animals, living in a veritable menagerie with dogs, cats, doves, a parrot, owl and goat. When one of their bird’s dropped dead, Roque whisked away the cage, keen to keep death from infecting her lively home.

Picasso’s seated nudes are among his most formidable subjects. They are often sculptural and monumental, inflected with psychological drama. Unable to really see a distinction between ‘woman’ and ‘model’, art historians have argued that all Picasso’s female models invoke Roque. While she never (or at least rarely) modelled for him, she is embedded in every woman he paints.

‘Femme au Chien’ is a powerful example of Picasso’s cubism. Fragmented and in denial of a single perspective, it is at once strange and absorbing. In his iteration, Philippe Le Miere splinters Picasso’s vision even more. It is as though he is painting an impressionist version of a cubist work. Perhaps there is something in this obfuscation that speaks to how history and the art market can distance itself from reality. What we say about ‘Femme au Chien’ and great artists of a bygone era is inescapably a story, a version of events.

Self-described as "data-driven", Le Miere's practice looks to the strange relationship between technology and art. Interestingly, in publishing this work to the internet it was flagged by Google as containing "partial nudity" – a robot's absurd error that has since between corrected "manually". Perhaps this is an example of Artificial Unintelligence.

For those interested in art history, contemporary culture, pop art and cubism, ‘after Pablo PICASSO Femme au chien’ will give you a fresh perspective.
