Rick Amor 'Study for 'Garden by the City''

Rick Amor is among Australia’s most collectible artists. His work is psychologically incisive, taking ordinary landscapes and filtering them through an emotional prism. In this work, the prism works both ways: on one side is a study for Amor’s painting ‘Garden by the City’, while on its verso is ‘Study for an Untitled West Gate Bridge Scene’. These are dichotomised faces of Amor’s world, one cast in swirling charcoals the other in dappled orange. It is as though he has walked the entire city, from its parks at midnight to its waters at sunset.

In a review for Amor’s exhibition at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Sebastian Smee wrote that he is singular: “there is nobody really like him and important… his commitment unmistakable, his intelligence, acute and his best images impossible to forget.”

Amor has been the subject of numerous public exhibitions at the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, Castlemaine Art Gallery and Australian Print Workshop. In 1999, he was appointed the official war artist and is the subject of two major monographs.

Whether you are more entranced by ‘Garden by the City’ or its moonlit counterpart, this work is a rich find. It will enliven collectors of contemporary and important landscape art.
