Collection: Sally Smart

B. 1960

Sally Smart works deals with identity, home and history. Spanning collage, painting, drawing, printmaking and photography, her practice is deeply process orientated. She perceives a link between gender politics and art centred around ‘making’ (historically denigrated as “women’s art”), deconstructing and reconstructing media to in turn, examine patriarchal hierarchies.

Smart is inspired by Cubism, Dada and Surrealism, and in particular the artists Sonia Delaunay, Hannah Hoch, Lyubov Popova, and Sophie Taeuber. Her work is uncanny and illusory, pivoting around the body to surprising results. She has exhibited widely both internationally and nationally, and her work is held in numerous major state galleries. In 2020, she participated in the National Gallery of Australia’s expansive ‘Know My Name’ exhibition.
