Sidney Nolan is considered among Australia’s greatest artists. His legacy is entwined with myth - Ned Kelly haunting the Australian outback, Gallipoli, Burke and Wills - all told in inventive ways.

‘Ladies with Hats’ is part of Nolan’s series of women in hats. Conceived at a time when it was still illegal for publicans to serve women, the series treated ordinary Australian women as formal extravaganzas, reminiscent of Rembrandt. In Nolan’s own words, he was fascinated by their “great seaweed mop hats coloured like lollies”.

Nolan is represented in every state gallery and internationally at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and London’s Tate. Nolan’s women in hats are represented at London's Tate. Elegant and enigmatic, this work will be the crown jewel to collections of important Australian art.
