Steve Rosendale’s ‘Hong Kong’ is an image of the contemporary sublime. The vastness of the mega-mall, digital infinity and sprawling mega-cities all invoke the over-powering, arresting character of the sublime. Here it takes form in Hong Kong, a heaving nexus of lights, cars and people. There is more going on that can be easily synthesized.

Rosendale’s work draws upon the collective memories of popular culture. He sets up enthralling mise-en-scenes, elongating a flicker of film into an entire self-contained universe; what’s more is this universe is dappled with nostalgia. ‘Hong Kong’ occurs in a universe that we will never experience and yet it is somehow familiar. What is nostalgia amputated from experience? And further, what is it to contend with the sheer size and complexity of lives beyond us?

Since the early 2000s, Rosendale has exhibited regularly across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. A finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, his work graces the walls of corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas, sparking the imagination of all who view it. For collectors of pop art and connoisseurs of the fast life, get lost in ‘Hong Kong’.
