Sydney Ball

B. 1933 - 2017

Sydney Ball is Australia’s foremost pioneer of abstract art. Beginning his career as an architectural draughtsman, Ball was introduced to Abstract Expressionism when he moved to New York in 1963. Here, he encountered artists such as Mark Rothko, whose embrace of medium over form encouraged Ball to delve into movements like Colour Field and Hard-edge Abstraction.

Across his career, Ball innovated his practice achieving unprecedented acclaim as late as 2007. Represented in all major public collections, Ball’s legacy continues to inspire contemporary Australian art, bringing with it colour, clean abstraction and boundless rejuvenation. Any piece from the "Canto" series is a sophisticated, museum-quality addition to your collection of Modern and Contemporary art.
