The Field Revisited

To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the National Gallery of Victoria is re-staging their inaugural exhibition 'The Field'. Met with awe, thrill and horror, this survey of hard-edge, geometric, colour and flat abstraction marked a turning point in Australian art. Not only did it set the tone for the NGV, it announced a new generation of artists. In the place of figurative art, these artists extended the canvas in ways that continue to inspire. Among them were Sydney Ball, Alun Leach-Jones and Robert Jacks. Through their unique styles, these artists propelled Australia into an international context, forever altering the course of Australian art. Browse their ever-cool, cutting edge contributions below.
