Collection: Women 2020 | Auguste Blackman
‘Women 2020’ is dedicated to Auguste Blackman’s mother and womankind at large. A muse to her husband Charles Blackman, poet, author, columnist, librettist, radio-producer and oral historian for the Australian National Library, Barbara Blackman is an icon of Australian culture. She is also blind. “My mother’s blindness has guided me from birth” Auguste reflects, “Her touch, her voice, her council have been there to sound out my life.”
Like Barbara, who preserved despite being blind, the vibrant women populating these portraits are life-forces, conceived during quarantine and inscribed with a “map of the trials they endure”. Auguste continues and enriches the art historical interest in the feminina, looking beyond aesthetics to the unique and vital contributions women make, especially during periods of hardship. “The world will only succeed with women at the helm… against all odds she will prevail,” says Auguste.
