How to hang a work of art

First Things First

Figuring out how to securely hang a heavy picture, depends on what kind of wall you have. If you have plaster walls, then your best bet is to find a stud (the vertical timber frames embedded in walls) where you can securely anchor the wall hook. If however, you don’t have a stud in a position suitable to hang your work, you can install a hollow wall anchor or toggle, which expands and spreads pressure when the picture is hung.

If you’re dealing with brick walls, drill a hole with a masonry bit, hammer in a plastic wall plug or some expansion spaghetti and insert the screw. In terms of timber panelling, a nail, screw or picture hook should do the job.

Other Factors to Consider

Other factors to consider when hanging a work of art include height and style. Generally, for self-evident reasons art should be hung at eye level, which is lower than you might think. In terms of placement or ‘style’ of hang, the options are plentiful. From a salon hang, to using a work of art to make a room pop, how you curate your space is up to you. Have fun playing curator!
