Born in Milan and based in Florence, Pietro Annigoni spent his artistic career reviving the Renaissance. With the same drama and depth as the Old Masters before him, Annigoni was esteemed most for his portraits, the subjects of which include Queen Elizabeth II, the Pope, British and American political leaders and members of European, Middle-Eastern and Indian aristocracy.

In ‘Roman Youth’, Annigoni pictures a man. Striking, his chiselled features are likely indebted to the High Renaissance Masters, in particular Michelangelo’s ‘Ignudi’ on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Despite this historical lineage however, something remains alive - and wild - about ‘Roman Youth’.

The subject of a feature documentary, Annigoni is represented in the British Royal Collection, Vatican Museums, Metropolitan Museum in New York, Uffizi Gallery and Pitti Palace in Florence. Further adding intrigue to ‘Roman Youth’ is its provenance - which will be revealed to its next custodian. For admirers of the Renaissance, high society and Italian art, this work promises to enthral.
