Charles Blackman 'Angles of Time' - RARE 1967 GRAPHIC FROM THE ASPENDALE PAPERS

Regular price $1,995.00

This hauntingly beautiful image by Charles Blackman evokes mystery and contemplation. Part of the highly regarded 'Aspendale Papers', it is the product of Charles Blackman' s keenly awaited homecoming. In 1966, the Blackman family returned to Australia after spending five years in London. Having sorely missed life beside the ocean, they began holidaying at Georges and Mirka Mora' s house at Aspendale Beach on Port Philip Bay. It was here that Blackman created this composition. Punnily, the name is also a reference to Henry James' s novella 'The Aspern Papers', which is set beside the Venice canals. Stripped of sentimentality, these works present silhouettes like apparitions, moving through the folds of time. At once otherworldly and nostalgic of a seaside childhood, the 'Aspendale Papers' represent a moment in time - caught between returning and leaving, and fiction and reality. Represented in most public institutions including the British Museum and the National Gallery of Victoria, this suite of works is considered among Blackman' s finest.
