Charles Blackman’s ‘Angles of Time’ is a haunting work. Comprising three ghostly figures, it evokes liminality – the spaces between leaving and returning, knowing and not, and youth and adulthood.
The work forms part of his revered ‘Aspendale Papers’ – a suite of etchings created after the artist returned from five years living in London. Having missed life beside the ocean, the Blackmans holidayed at Georges and Mirka Mora’s house at Aspendale Beach on Port Phillip Bay. It was here that Blackman conceived of the suite, inspired also by Henry James’s novella ‘The Aspern Papers’ which is set beside the Venice canals.
Profoundly evocative, ‘Angles of Times’ presents silhouettes like apparitions moving through the folds of time. At once otherworldly and nostalgic of a seaside childhood, they recall a moment in time, a feeling. Represented in most public institutions including the British Museum and the National Gallery of Victoria, ‘The Aspendale Papers’ is considered among Blackman’s finest suites.
For admirers of Blackman and collectable prints, submerge into ‘Angles of Time’.
