Crediting drawing as his first love, Charles Blackman was rarely without a Rotring pen and paper. Filling hundreds of sketchbooks across his life, he believed “if you can’t draw, you can’t paint”. Like a still from the artist’s mind, this work continues Blackman’s lifelong enthrallment with the ‘femina’. As a senior artist, he would invite a model into his home to sketch, often with friend and fellow artist Judy Cassab - of which this is the fruit. More a compulsion than career, Blackman’s love of drawing persisted all his life. Signed in full and sourced from the artist’s personal archive, this elegant work invites the viewer into Blackman’s most sacred of spaces, his drawing room.
