Auguste Blackman 'Sea of Flowers' - oil on canvas
With heart on sleeve, Auguste Blackman projects his parents into Lewis Carroll’s white rabbit and curious heroine. Atop a sea of flowers, the duo find solace in a disorientating world. The kinship shared between the Blackman family and Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is among the richest bonds in Australian art. In Alice, Charles Blackman saw his increasingly blind wife Barbara. In the White Rabbit, his son Auguste sees his father and in the Dormouse sits Auguste himself, forever peeking from behind teacups wistfully watching his parents whirl through life.
