According to myth, the minotaur symbolises the meeting of opposites: the feminine and masculine, creature and human, rational and irrational, spiritual and instinctual, and good and evil. This duality underlies Auguste Blackman’s ‘Waiting for Beauty’. In it, a dapper minotaur clutches a bouquet of flowers, his fast half cast in shadow.
When discussing the work, Blackman muses:
“Waiting for Beauty… Him or her? Waiting for Beauty is about tackling our inner demons and no matter how difficult things can be, friends and lovers will come to our aid. Reach out and find your own beauty."
Beauty, like the minotaur, thrives in duality. It cannot exist without ugliness, just as cut flowers must decay and day must dissolve into night. In our search for meaning, Blackman evokes the importance of hardship. His minotaur has endured a long journey to arrive at your doorstep, flowers in hand, a harbinger of beauty. Will you let him in?
