'Afternoon Light' was created after Charles Blackman returned home from years spent living abroad in 1968. While it conjures up images of reading in parks, as always there is a strain of the personal. Representative of the artist and his then wife and muse Barbara, it depicts Blackman reading aloud to her. A strangely nostalgic and melancholic scene, it is imbued the knowledge Barbara was losing her eyesight, leaving her unable to read herself.
One of Australia s most iconic artists, Blackman's work speaks to us all. To live with his visual poetry promises to be an ever-enriching experience for you and your family. Catch 'Afternoon Light' before it fades into night.
