Cats wander throughout Charles Blackman’s work. Sometimes they are caught in the garden, on a tin roof or silhouetted against the night sky – enigmatic, noble and watchful. Art historians have speculated that this cat is reflective of Blackman’s penchant for solitude and his experience of loneliness.

In the rare and whimsical ‘Alice’s Cat’, two of Blackman’s most beloved motifs unite: Alice in Wonderland and cats. In it, a surreally small cat curls up on a chair that watches over her. A giant Alice occupies the background, her hands large enough to scoop up the cat and put her in her top pocket. Feet peek from beneath a chest of draws. All around strangeness brews, with Alice’s cat calm at its centre: the eye of the Wonderland tornado.

Blackman stands among Australias most beloved and collectable artists. With a career as distinct as it is diverse, his work is consistently informed by a sense of childlike wonder. This work is rare and was never edition into an edition. For fans of Blackman, cats and Alice in Wonderland, let ‘Alice’s Cat’ bound into your collection.
