Charles Blackman is among Australia’s most celebrated artists. His reputation is built upon figuratism cut with emotion. In ‘Australian Story’, this talent beams. Comprising nine vignettes of seaside life, this work synthesises Australian culture through the eyes of one of our greatest artists.

According to the artist’s son ‘Australian Story’ likely dates from 1969, when Blackman travelled throughout Noosa, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. Here, under the broad Australian sun Blackman found respite after six years spent hibernating in London. He was at his happiest during these years.

‘Australian Story’ is a love story. It charts Blackman’s magnetic pull towards the ocean and interest in Australian history, The Tyranny of Distance by Geoffrey Blainey and Robert Hughes’s The Fatal Shore. He seems acutely aware of the Australian psyche - isolated, girt by sea yet abundant and quiet, fit for an artist’s mind. For collector’s of iconic Australian art and Blackman, ‘Australian Story’ is a treasure. From Captain Cook’s tense arrival to the skyscraping peaks of the Gold Coast, find inspiration in Blackman’s Australia.
