This drawing comes from the time immediately after the artist’s Paris sojourn and it rings with Blackman magic. In 1971, Charles Blackman was awarded a studio in the Cite des Artes. In the City of Light Charles submerged into his Parisian practice - reveling in what would represent his golden period for drawing. During this European residency Charles was introduced to the Rotring pen and it became his drawing tool of choice. In this portrait, as always, Charles leads with feeling, letting the pen follow in poetic rapture. As their stint in Paris drew to a close, Charles was happy to return home - he longed for his Australian artistic community. ‘Cosmos’, was drawn just after the Blackmans return to Paddington, Sydney. It is a portrait of a friends pet and it is flushed with new found French confidence. Auguste Blackman, the artists eldest son explains Charles cherished friendship with Halifax Hayes. “The dog Cosmo belonged to Halifax Hayes who was Charles great friend. Hal built houses and studios for Charles. Hal was a giant in dads life. They shared a great appreciation of food, women and wine.” This superb original work of art captures the development of Blackman’s lifelong affair with drawing alongside his singular vision for life. From the Blackman familys private collection to yours - this exquisite drawing is sure to be treasured for years to come.
