This rare lithograph comes from the height of Charles Blackman’s international career. It is part of The Aspendale Papers: a series of works created after the Blackman family returned to Australia from living in London for five years. Having missed the Australian seas, they holidayed at George and Mirka Mora’s house at Aspendale Beach on Port Phillip Bay. Thus the series got its name, which also references Henry James’s novella set on the Venice Canals, The Aspern Papers.

Intensely evocative, ‘Mid Air’ pictures a childlike figure levitating above water. Beneath the water lies its shadow, a sleeping child. Where the above water figure is an abstracted silhouette, its submarine counterpart is familiar. Like apparitions, they transcend time and place, giving form to the space between returning and leaving; the muted familiarity of rediscovering a place you almost forgot. Beside ‘Mid Air’, the air is crisp and clean, symbolic of new beginnings, change and an unknown path widening ahead.

The Aspendale Papers are represented in the collections of the British Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria and Heide Museum of Modern Art. A rare and museum-quality image from one of Australia’s preeminent artists, ‘Mid Air’ is the poetry of reaching land after years at sea.

For collectors of prints, Modern art and Blackman, this is a stellar opportunity.
