Cats wander throughout Charles Blackman’s work: sometimes they are caught in the garden, on a tin roof or silhouetted against the night sky; enigmatic, noble and watchful. Art historians have speculated that the cat is reflective of Blackman’s penchant for solitude, even his loneliness. In ‘Mozart Playing to his Cat’ however, the feline finds company.

In it, Mozart is pictured serenading an expansive cat. Merging two of Blackman’s loves - music and cats - this work is made up of loving, generous lines. With thatching fur-like detail, a grand piano and periwinkle blue palette, ‘Mozart Playing to his Cat’ is a visual symphony; a hymn for the introverts.

‘Mozart Playing to his Cat’ is rare. It was never eventuated into an edition or set to market, making its next custodian very fortuitous. Blackman stands among Australia's most beloved and collectable artists. With a career as distinct as it is diverse, his work is consistently informed by a sense of childlike wonder. For fans of classical music, cats and Blackman, this collector’s treasure deserves your encore.
