Charles Blackman’s ‘Colette - Summer Days’ is a vision of tranquility. It sees a woman recline in a hammock, the surrounding garden enveloping her. Blackman was a fan of the French writer Colette, whose writing he was introduced to by Sunday Reed. He particularly liked her novel ‘Creatures Great and Small’.
Perhaps the Colette referenced in this work’s title is the author. Blackman was frequently troubling the boundaries between the real and literary; his was a world of beauty, feeling and intuition. The garden embodies this – it is fertile and domestic, otherworldly yet familiar. At its edge, the language of beauty rules.
For collectors of Blackman and literary art, as well as those seeking a moment of respite, ‘Colette - Summer Days’ is a delight.
