In Ancient Europe it was believed that in times of hardship, mother pelicans would cut themselves to feed their young. Their blood had a life-giving quality, said to resurrect the dying. From this myth, the pelican became symbolic of Jesus Christ, as well as the virtues of humility, sacrifice and unity.
In Charles Blackman’s majestic ‘The Journey’, the pelican is a mode of transport. Atop its back rides a reticent girl, a vivid blue sky its backdrop. In the artist’s distinct inflection, whimsy is cut with human emotion.
‘The Journey’ is a stirring work. It speaks to the theistic symbolism of the pelican, as well as Blackman’s interest in the feminine. Perhaps too it’s a twist on the old adage that storks deliver babies — pelicans carry adolescents into adulthood.
