‘Falling Figure with Beast’s Head’ by Arthur Boyd is a collector’s treasure. Not only is it a fine example from one of Australia’s most distinguished artists, it tells a rich story. Accompanied by the book ‘Arthur Boyd: Etchings and Lithographs’ in which this work is published, it is also documented with an original note from the British gallery that first sold it.
This note, tacked to the back of the frame, describes an artist in the throes of his success. Since Boyd arrived in London in 1960, the gallery laments not owning more his work - declaring him a “marvellous artist” and “perhaps the most gifted of the famous of the Boyd family”. In ‘Falling Figure with Beast’s Head’, they recognise Boyd’s rich inner life and its constant enrapturement with the struggle for liberty.
Inventive, wry and psychologically adroit, this work could be a “twentieth century Bosch” - an image that reveals itself further with every look. A nexus of history, textures and talent, this first edition etching exemplifies that makes collecting exciting - that is, the opportunity to sink into the past.
