In the early to mid 1990s, David Boyd took up a residency at Macquarie University’s School of Law. Known for his unflinching examinations of Australian culture, the resultive series saw him address the law in all its quirks and queries.

In ‘Dancing Judges’, Boyd imagines a flurry of judges. Their legs kicking like a caught insect, these magistrates appear crestfallen and confused. This dance is anything but joyful. Instead, Boyd fates his judges to a unconsenting dance of absurdity.

In a 2004 art review, Alex McDonald described Boyd as “ahead of his time in addressing the mistreatment of indigenous people in Australia”. With this in mind, ‘Dancing Judges’ turns profound. Rather than the ideal we desire it to be, the legal system can be just as strange and unjust as the universe at large.

Boyd traverses themes with dexterity and wit. He was a master potter, painter and printmaker, who is represented in all state collections and continues to resonate throughout Australia today. For collectors of important Australian art, why not dance with Boyd?
