William Merric Boyd is a key figure of the Boyd artistic family dynasty, father to Arthur, David, Lucy, Mary and Guy Boyd. He was an active ceramist, sculptor and chronicaller of his family and environs, opening a pottery studio in Murrumbeena that was tragically destroyed by fire in 1926.
‘A Tackeroohgh on his Pony Hack’ is an example of Boyd’s compulsion to draw. It is a charming image, featuring a man upon his pony. There is something illustrative about the work, as though it is a scene from an unfolding narrative. Boyd has brightly titled it, forging a character in broad strokes.
Boyd studied under Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin at the National Gallery School. For collectors of Modern Australian art, works on paper and the Boyd family, hop aboard ‘A Tackeroohgh on his Pony Hack’ before it gallops away.
