Robert Camm came to Australian in 1853. An artist in the throes of nation building, Camm is best known for his patriotic painting "Aussies" which is in the collection of the Australian War Memorial. Dated between 1914-15, it is one of few and finest examples of a work that depicts Australian soldiers at the beginning of WWI. Predominantly, Camm painted pastoral scenes and coastal views of Victoria, particularly Apollo Bay, Lorne and Ocean Grove. In 'Cattle and Hay', this interest falls on a farm. With a quiet stoicism, he captures life on the land and the animals that inhabit it. Whether heartfelt war-time images, or hazy bushland vistas, Camm set about documenting the changes affecting the young nation. Atmospheric, historically rich and rare, celebrate the emergence of Australia as we know it with 'Cattle and Hay'.
