Robert Camm came to Australian in 1853. An artist in the throes of nation building, Camm is best known for his patriotic painting ‘Aussies’ which is in the collection of the Australian War Memorial. Dated between 1914 and 1915, it is one of few and finest examples of a work that depicts Australian soldiers at the beginning of WWI. Beyond art, Camm was also taught at a State School.
Predominantly, Camm painted pastoral scenes and coastal views of Victoria, particularly Apollo Bay, Lorne and Ocean Grove. He was a close friend and student of Dutch-Australian painter, Jan Hendrik Scheltema. Frequently, the duo made trips to country Victoria to paint, sometimes capturing the same subject on the same day. ‘Cattle and Hay’ is an example of this.
Suffused with Scheltema’s influence, this work captures life on the land and the animals that inhabit it. It is quietly stoic, a sunlit ode to pastoral life. Whether heartfelt war-time images or hazy bushland vistas, Camm set about documenting the changes affecting the young nation. Atmospheric, historically rich and rare, witness the emergence of Australia - and Australian art - through 'Cattle and Hay'.
