Criss Canning is among Australia’s most sought-after artists. Her work is meticulous – still lifes inspired by Japanese art and the geometric designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There is a meditative quality to her practice, steered by the aim to “always create something of Beauty.”

‘Banksia’ is characteristically Canning. With reverence, she captures a banksia, paying close attention to its sculptural form. The specimen hangs elegant and alien, a nettle, slight in form, in the background. This is a work of patience and perceptiveness.

Canning is represented across numerous public collections, including at the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2007, she was the subject of a retrospective at Benalla Art Gallery that broke attendance records. From her home surrounded by gardens to yours, ‘Banksia’ is a reminder to appreciate beauty in its minor chords. It will enliven collections of etchings and contemporary still life.
